Glovers Walk: Yeovil Art Space and Love Yeovil appoint independent Town Centre Board

Press Statement November 2024

Yeovil Art Space and Love Yeovil have been commissioned to organise a community led consultation for the future of Glovers Walk. This intends to help develop a range of uses on the site and presents an opportunity to trial ideas that will support the town centre and the wider Yeovil community. Following the transformation of Glovers Walk into a green space, the potential uses are open ended and provide very exciting prospects for Yeovil.

As part of the consultation, Yeovil Art Space and Love Yeovil are pleased to announce the appointment of an independent Town Centre Board who will bring perspective and accountability to the project, ensuring Yeovil’s communities and voices are at the heart of the consultation. The Town Centre Board is composed of skilled and experienced individuals who are passionate about making positive changes to the town. The Board includes: Amanda Card, Ceri Stephens, Mark Bolton, Adam Dyer, Stephen Fox, Ian Timms, Gareth Witt, Jasmine Strak, Natasha Rand, Zoe Li, and Natalia Lewis.

Ian Timms, Yeovil Refresh Project Manager, explains,

The fund is provided on specified projects and is linked to specific outcomes. This means that we are committed by the grant agreement to deliver the demolition. All of the funding associated with the Future High Streets Fund (FHSF) must have been committed and leave the council’s account by 31st March 2025. All contracts or grant agreements related to the fund had to be in place, signed and sealed by 30th September 2024. The business case associated with the grant means that we are committed to delivery of a meantime space.

In any development on larger sites the creation of a viable and deliverable plan takes time. We estimate that a new development on the site would take 3-5 years to realise based on other major development sites. The meantime uses will be important to enable positive uses on the site but will also inform the creation of the longer term development plan. The meantime uses are likely to be in place for a minimum of 1-3 years.”

Future High Street Funding has been allocated on the condition that the Glovers Walk demolition is to revitalise the area. The 1.5-acre disused shopping complex at the Yeovil town centre will be flattened in 2025 and an open green space will be created to test a breadth of ideas and potential meanwhile use for the area.

To gather the input and ideas of Yeovil’s community, residents and business owners, Yeovil Art Space and Love Yeovil have launched a short survey, which is live until Saturday 30th November at 5pm. The survey asks the community what they would like to see for the future of Glovers Walk following its transformation into an open green space. This will inform both the meanwhile use and longer term plans for the area.

Alongside the survey, there will be a series of workshops to capture the public’s thoughts and ideas at Yeovil Art Space on Friday 8th November, Wednesday 13th November, and Saturday 30th November. To sign up, please indicate in the survey via the link yeovilartspace.uk/gloverswalk or click the button below

Taste of Yeovil Recipe Book Launch & Community Heritage Forum

A celebratory evening to launch the ‘Taste of Yeovil’ community recipe book.

6 – 8pm, 8 March 2024, Yeovil Art Space

Join Yeovil Art Space for the launch of our community recipe book ‘Taste of Yeovil’, telling the stories of nine Yeovil residents and their favourite food. Each participant was asked about why their favourite recipe is important to them, as well as how Yeovil has become their home. Designed by international artist Lisa Cheung, with illustrations from Yeovil College Students and featuring recipes from across the generations, this piece of work captures stories of food culture in our community over time.

A friendly and sociable evening with food and fun. A chance to reminisce about your favourite places to eat and drink in the town. Did you enjoy coffee at Cadena‘s or a hot luncheon at the Cottage Cafe? Join in the game activities from Glade (glade.org) to share personal recollections about food which can then be added to the Story of Yeovil Digital Map (storyofyeovil.uk/story). Some of our recipe book participants will be at the event to share their stories and recipes.

Our community recipe book ‘Taste of Yeovil‘ will be available to buy for £5. There will be light refreshments served, inspired by the recipes in our recipe book, for a small donation.

The event is free of charge, welcome all, but if you wish to attend please email us, or RSVP here https://forms.gle/NQa6KvKVtU9yRCmz7

Lantern Parade and Wassail Event for Half Term

Thursday 15th February 2PM – 6:30PM

Join us for the next ‘Taste of Yeovil’ event! We are partnering up with Love Yeovil and Yeovil Country Park to bring you this year’s Lantern Parade with a celebration of the Somerset ‘Wassail’ tradition and many family friendly creative activities here in Yeovil.

2pm – Creative workshops
4.30pm – Lantern Parade
5.30pm
Wassail Ceremony

From 2PM there will be an array of creative workshops to participate in, including charcoal making and print creation, lantern making, drumming workshops, and fireside cooking. These workshops are free of charge and for all ages and ranges of ability so we hope everyone can find something that really makes their night.

At 4:30PM we will hold the popular annual lantern parade, starting at Petters Way and making our way together to Penn Hill community Orchard. Yeovil College art students will be leading the parade with lanterns they have made inspired by food.

After the parade at 5:30PM the wassail ceremony will be held at Penn Hill in Yeovil country park where there will be a blessing of the community orchard.

The term “wassail” comes from Old English wes hál or waes hael, meaning ‘be thou hale‘, which in turn means ‘be in good health’ or ‘be fortunate’, and is traditionally a time to bless the orchards in hope of a good harvest for the year to come! Although historically celebrated on Twelfth Night, modern day wassails are usually held January to February, and we couldn’t resist including this event in the Taste of Yeovil programme!

Don’t forget to dress warm and wear appropriate footwear for a woodland
walk!

l

Come in to Yeovil Art Space, (Unit 13-15 Vicarage Walk Quedam Shopping Centre, BA20 1EU) OR Ninesprings cafe and collect your free lantern making kit!

This kit includes 10 sticks, tissue paper and an LED tealight, along with a copy of the instructions!

They’re going fast so better be quick!

Of course you may use your own resources to make a lantern for this event, but the kits make the process easier (especially if it’s your first time making one)!

This event has been funded by Abri and Yeovil Town Council and is part of the Taste of
Yeovil programme and the wider Story of Yeovil project which has been generously funded
by National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Story of Yeovil is coordinated by Yeovil Art Space on behalf of the Yeovil Art and Heritage Working Group and aims to gather stories from diverse perspectives in the town’s heritage and history through creativity and storytelling.

Town Centre Art supports Wellbeing this Winter

Walking the pathway in the town centre you can expect to see yarn bombing style colourful threads, mushrooms, tree branches and baubles, created by using recycled and eco-friendly materials.   It involved more than 30 Yeovil Creatives (Yeovil Art Space member artists) and 12 children aged 7-11 from our Saturday Art Club.

Artwork in the installation has been created by a collaboration between the artists Lupe Velazquez and Grażyna Wikierska, who created the large paintings and brought the installation together.

The main focus of the installation is to bring colour and imagination to Yeovil’s public, creating something that makes people feel positive about themselves and the town. Not only brightening up the area for shoppers and visitors, we hope the artwork gives an uplifting impact to everyone during the darkest and coldest months of the year.

Artist Grażyna Wikierska tells us something about the ideas behind the designs in the work.

“It was a great pleasure to work on this project. Yeovil needs more street art to brighten and cheer up the mood. I think it really has some impact when people see beauty around them.

Nature plays a big role in the paintings. Mushrooms symbolise entangled life, calm reinforcement. Their seasonal ability to grow fast from the underground network is very promising and inspiring.  It symbolises rebirth, new beginnings, good luck, transformation, prosperity and enlightenment.

The circles in my painting represent spores, spores symbolise the spreading of love, kindness, conscious living to respect all life because all of us come from one source.”

The recipe can be seen in our display, written on the back of a envelope which holds a letter dated November 1943 and is addressed to ‘Miss M.G. Sterry, Wiltown Cottage, Curry Rivel, Taunton, Somerset’.

More about the Map…

We are really excited to see the development of this audio-visual map developed by Gavin Morris and Stephen Ives for the Sound of Yeovil project.

It is built using Roundware – an actively-developed open-source project developed by Halsey Burgund. Roundware was initially developed for sound art installations, but has since been used for innovative museum audio tours as well as other educational purposes. It lets you collect audio using a smartphone or web access, upload it to a central point along with images and text and then play it back.

This map will serve as a real legacy for the Story of Yeovil project, recording and sharing many stories from our town and accessible to the Yeovil community near and far.

Sound of Yeovil Exhibition: Story of D.I.Y.

16 September – 18 November, 2023

Part of Sound of Yeovil, we present STORY OF D.I.Y., an exhibition telling the story of Yeovil through a collection of Yeovil-related music memorabilia, such as Fanzines, tickets, posters, original photos, along with an extensive archive of vintage recordings.

Celebrating the wealth of creativity in Yeovil through home-made music and its visual manifestation, the exhibition brings together a comprehensive collection of music fanzines circulated in and around Yeovil from the 70s onwards, including All the Madmen, Feeding the Fish, Still Crazy, Human Debris, Clique, Screed and other one-off wonders. It also shows original photos, artworks and rare finds contributed by individuals, especially for this exhibition.

Apart from reflecting Yeovil’s rich music heritage and a glimpse of Yeovil’s social history, the exhibition provides insight into the D.I.Y. culture and the experimental spirit that long existed within our community. From a diverse range of music, visual artworks and expressions that amplify the voice of creativity, of those who were on the stage and behind the scenes. Exploring possibilities through collaborations, Yeovil continues to be a breeding ground for D.I.Y. music and art in the West Country.

Acknowledgements

This exhibition is part of an ongoing archive project started in 2015 by the founder of EPS Yeovil, creative producer and sound artist Stephen Ives, who would like to thank the contributions from the creators and collectors for lending their original materials and sharing their stories.  Story of D.I.Y. is curated by Zoe Li in collaboration with Stephen Ives, with support from Simon Barber and the Yeovil Art Space team.

The exhibition is part of Sound of Yeovil, a Story of Yeovil public programme, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, delivered by Yeovil Art Space on behalf of Yeovil Heritage and Art Working Group.
