OUR TOWN Art Commission

Help our town take centre stage!

Yeovil Art Space is absolutely delighted to announce the appointment of artists Sue Green and Alice Bowen-Churchill who will create a new public artwork for Yeovil Town Centre as part of the OUR TOWN project funded by Art Council England. Using textiles the artists will create a new participatory arts project that engages with the local community and celebrates Yeovil’s untold stories.

Sue Green (pictured left) has many years experience as an artist, researcher and educator and enjoys combining these distinct elements with a community engaged practice. She teaches and exhibits widely and is Exhibitions Officer for the Textile Study Group. Sue is currently working towards an exhibition at the British Textile Biennale in October 2025.

As a visual artist her studio practice explores making-unmaking-remaking, conceptually applied to temporal acts of labour-intensive stitching and a deep connection with process, materiality and narrative. Often site responsive, evoking a strong sense of place, collaboration is key and Sue works with diverse communities facilitating creative outcomes without hierarchy.

Alice Bowen-Churchill (pictured right) is a Bristol-based artist and designer who creates interactive artworks, participatory projects, and events. She collaborates with diverse groups to promote creativity through play, believing that artistic practice should be accessible to all. Alice has worked with Oxfam, RWA and the Wellcome Collection, and she values the power of collaboration and conversation through making.

The artists were selected by the Yeovil Art Space Art Action Group, a collective of local residents, community leaders and representatives from groups including Able2Achieve, Friends of Yeovil Country Park, Friends of Sidney Gardens, SkoolBeanz CIC, Yeovil Creatives, and Yeovil Diversity Project.

They hope the commission will help build a sense of local pride and focus on the positives of Yeovil, bringing the town to the centre stage. The group was supported through the selection process by Dr Cara Courage, a renowned leader in placemaking and a consultant in the cultural and creative sectors.

The Art Action Group was established at the heart of Yeovil Art Space’s project ‘Our Town, a creative placemaking project funded by Arts Council England, offering a programme of art and cultural events for Yeovil Town Centre from now until March 2026. Alongside the creation of the new public artwork, the project will see the formation of a new arts festival and a Creative Enterprise Programme co-produced with young people.

The Art Action Group will continue to work with Yeovil Art Space to support the commissioned artists
