Yeovil’s Wartime History Walk

Wednesday 24 July, 10.30am – 11.45am

Led by an experienced team from the South Somerset Heritage Collection, Joseph Lewis and Edd Chilcott, we are taking participants on a walk through Yeovil’s backstreets and town centre, discussing how the town coped during the World Wars, and exploring the sites of vanished buildings.

The route…

Begins at Yeovil Library, King George Street, we then meander through the town firstly taking in the aerial image of Yeovil Town Football Club at Tesco Supermarket. We then highlight Louisa Harris Diaries and Louisa’s First World War Experience.

We progress onto the Petter and Edgar Bollard and the former Gloving Factory alongside, also explaining about these industries in the First and Second World War. Plus the Horseless Carriage from 1895 and the Petter Family.

Then onto the Millennium Clock and the links to local industries around the base of the clock before crossing into the Borough Arcade and explaining about the plaque to Fireman Charles Gillard on the remaining part of the former Corn Exchange. Charles Gillard was killed in an air raid on Good Friday, April 11 1941.

From here, we walk onto Yeovil War Memorial highlighting W.H. Adams, on the same ship, H.M.S. Hampshire as Lord Kitchener (Your Country Needs You Poster) and highlight First World War soldiers leaving Yeovil and VE Day Celebrations in the Borough.

In St John’s Church, we highlight the Prowse Memorial Window and outside the VE Day and VJ Benches before looking towards Wyndham Hill and Peace Day Celebrations in 1919.

We work our way back to King George Street and highlight the foundation stone with now Mayor Percival Petter before completing our walk back at Yeovil Library by highlighting when the Baptist Church, South Street was a temporary Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital in the First World War and W.R.E Mitchelmore’s plaque.
