Anything You Can Think Of / Everything You Can Imagine

Following the public consultation around the future uses for the Glovers Walk site, Somerset Council further commissioned Yeovil Art Space to answer the call for art and culture. We have brought in artists LOW PROFILE to create an artwork responding to the current meanwhile use conversations as well as to inspire plans for the future.

LOW PROFILE are artists Rachel Dobbs and Hannah Rose based in Plymouth they have been working in collaboration since 2003, with co-creation and community central to their practice.

“We are most interested in the connections between people, and creating new experiences that happen in people’s real life. We use things like bold statements, text, badges, sound, temporary gatherings, and event-structures to help us do this. We make art that is designed to be encountered in social situations, public spaces and become part of people’s everyday. We work hard to make these encounters hopeful, engaging, joyful and thought-provoking. This artwork draws attention to the importance of expansive thinking, taking new perspectives, imagining different ways of doing things, and the importance of creativity – and to encourage everyone in Yeovil to get involved with actively rethinking how the Glovers Walk site will continue to be used in the future.”

ParSigns, a company based in Somerset which has worked on a number of window artwork projects across the town centre, have printed and installed the artwork on the protective fencing around the Glovers Walk site which stands over 6 foot high and runs 120 feet from the newly renovated Triangle area to the 94 Club.

Yeovil Art Space say:

“It was challenging when we were given the task to produce artwork for the 120m hoarding, but LOW PROFILE’s artwork is just perfect. It brokers the expectation of art with the purpose to brighten up the place, to encourage our imaginations and deeper thinking of what we can achieve collectively, in a place that is full of uncertainty and flux. There will be a series of activities to link the artwork with different communities across Yeovil. We are looking forward to having more conversations about Glovers Walk soon.”

Yeovil Art Space would like to thank ParSigns for their outstanding work on the project and Walters Group, who were appointed by Somerset Council as demolition contractors for the Glovers Walk site in Yeovil, for their support.

LOW PROFILE was commissioned by Yeovil Art Space on behalf of Somerset Council with
funding from Homes England.

Somerset Council has commissioned Love Yeovil and Yeovil Art Space to carry out a public consultation about the interim use of Glovers Walk once it is demolished. The project was overseen by a newly formed Yeovil Town Board made up of individual professionals bringing together leadership and skills, aiming to make positive change for Yeovil.

The project has also engaged consultant Dr Cara Courage who brings extensive arts and culture experience in making change, regeneration and building pride of place. Talking the Walk is a series of activities taking place between October to December 2024, capturing aspirations of future use of Glovers Walk from Yeovil’s community from all backgrounds. See below for the result of the consultation.

Glovers Walk will be demolished by mid 2025, it will be available for temporary ‘meanwhile use’ over the next 3–5 years, providing an exciting opportunity to bring life to the area before long-term development begins. We are seeking your input on how this space can best serve Yeovil during this period, as well as what you would like to see in its future development.

In this statement from the Somerset Council:

“Initially, we will create a new space for temporary ‘meanwhile’ use. This is to ensure that the site – once levelled – is utilised positively and effectively while we consider long term development options. The creation of green spaces featuring a range of activities would be one example of this type of ‘meanwhile’ use.”
