Yeovil Art Space are delighted to have received funding from an Open Mental Health Grant and Somerset Community Foundation to deliver a series of workshops and activities with partners across Yeovil.

We are working with some wonderful organisations in Yeovil to make these happen;
- Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and their patients on the ‘ready to go’ wards at Yeovil Hospital;
- Yeovil4Family who are based at The Gateway working with The Roost, an intentional drop-in support service for those who are having housing problems and experiencing homelessness and the Welcome Hub, who support new migrants and refugees;
- Yeovil Diversity Project, a LGBTQ+ peer-support group who champion equality and diversity in Yeovil;
- and Able2Achieve, a support group for young adults with learning disabilities, mental ill-health, and other associated disabilities.
We are working with local artists Ali Mauger, Steph Baker and Izzie Jobbins to deliver the project exploring the idea of ‘Home’ and what this means for our participants. Participants will take part in a series of creative workshops and activities. We hope this project will help to improve and maintain the well-being of those who take part and build their self-confidence.
The project is being produced by Natasha Rand, Engagement Director at Yeovil Art Space, and coordinated by Izzie Jobbins, Assistant Producer at Yeovil Art Space.
A few examples of our Creative sessions so far…
Artist Ali Mauger has been working with Able2Achieve, a support group for young adults with learning difficulties, mental ill-health and other associated disabilities. They have learned printing techniques to create their own bunting and used creative activities to explore where they felt at home.
Ali has also spent time with outpatients with Dementia on the ‘Ready to Go’ Wards at Yeovil District Hospital. We are told that the sessions were clearly beneficial to the participants providing interest and conversation on the wards, making a very positive impact on the mental well being and mood of the patients.

Artist Izzie Jobbins has worked with The Roost at The Gateway, an intentional drop-in support service for those who are having housing problems. Together they have explored the idea of belonging using a variety of artistic methods and crafts. Izzie is also working on a series of gatherings with the Yeovil Diversity Project, more updates soon!
Textile Artist and Crafter, Steph Baker, joined the Welcome Hub group, working with some Ukrainian families who are supported by Yeovil4Family, They have learned to crochet granny squares, had a go at Indian block printing, and made felt.

This project has been generously funded by Open Mental Health and Somerset Community Foundation and with their support we have been able to work across Yeovil’s community improving and maintain the wellbeing of the participants.
